Security Stats

The number of U.S. data breaches tracked in 2018 dipped some from 1,632 in 2017 to 1,244 in 2018 but the number of records exposed jumped from 197 million to 446 million, according to a new report released by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). This represents a substantial hike of 126 percent.

Successful Cyber breaches in Texas cost the state $195M in 2018 according to data compiled by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The IC3 consistently places Texas among the top three or four states in economic losses due to cybercrime. Government Agencies in Texas continue to be a high-value target. Between 2005 and 2018, there were almost ten-thousand data breaches exposing over 1.5 billion records including social security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, etc...

90% of all cyber breaches are successfully executed through targeting employees who are not cyber prepared.

Plan of Action Needed

Government agencies must become pro-active, not reactive, when it comes to data security and preventing a breach. The employees must be part of the solution. Training staff to quickly identify potential threats will greatly reduce risk.

Although cyber-criminals may get the headlines and media attention, the fact is that most breaches are caused by human error and process failures, not advanced hackers.

Technology can't always stop someone from making mistakes but training them in a way that changes thinking, and behavior, can bring about a “Breach-Proof Culture” where employees across all departments share a heightened awareness, understanding, and commitment to eliminating risk.

Agencies that proactively educate their employees regarding data security and identity theft drastically reduce their chances of a costly breach. TBG Solutions’ training impacts the way you think! When you change the way someone thinks, it results in a change of behavior, reducing the risk of a data breach.
